Free Etsy SEO Checker for Titles, Tags and Descriptions
This free Etsy SEO checker reviews the three text fields that both buyers and Etsy search read: your listing title, your 13 tags and your description. Paste them in and you get an instant 0-100 score, broken into factors. Each factor comes with a specific fix, such as moving the item name to the front of the title or filling empty tag slots. The checker is rule-based, with no AI involved, so the same text always earns the same score and you can see exactly why.
How to use the Etsy SEO checker
The checker applies fixed rules rather than a language model. That means the same listing text always returns the same score, and results appear as soon as you submit.
- Copy your live title from the listing editor exactly as written, including commas, separators and capitalization.
- Paste every tag you currently use, separated by commas or line breaks. Include weak or outdated tags too, so the count and length checks reflect reality.
- Paste the complete description, not just the first paragraph, because depth is judged on the whole text.
- Run the check and read the 0-100 score together with the per-factor notes underneath it.
- Edit the weakest factor first, then paste the revised version and run the check again to see what moved.
Checking one listing at a time suits a new product or a single underperformer. For a full shop review, work through our Etsy shop SEO audit checklist and use the checker as the listing-level step inside it.
What each factor checks, and why it matters
Title guidance
Etsy titles can run to 140 characters, but the 2025 Seller Handbook recommends short, clear titles of roughly 15 words or fewer. The title factor scores your text against that advice:
- Does the title open with what the item is, such as "Ceramic Mug" rather than "Cozy Morning Vibes"?
- Do key traits like color, material and size appear early, where a shopper scanning results will see them?
- Are any words repeated? Writing "Mug" three times wastes space that a new trait could use.
- Are subjective words such as "beautiful" or "perfect" present? These belong in the description.
- Is the length close to the 15-word guideline, or stretched toward the character cap?
The reasoning is practical. A short, literal title is easier for buyers to read on a phone, and it makes it obvious to Etsy what you are selling.
The 13 tags
Every listing gets 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. The checker flags empty slots, tags over the limit, exact duplicates and single-word tags. A multi-word phrase such as "linen table runner" covers more of the ways buyers actually type a search than "linen" alone. A set built from phrases describes the item from more angles.
Description depth
The description factor checks whether there is enough substance for a buyer to decide. It looks at length, whether the opening line restates what the item is, and whether you mention concrete details like dimensions, materials, care and what arrives in the package. A two-line description scores low because shoppers with unanswered questions either have to message you or move on, not because of a word-count rule for its own sake.
How to act on the fixes
Treat each note as a specific edit, not a grade. Take a typical "before" title: "Beautiful Handmade Mug Perfect Gift Mug for Coffee Lovers Mug". The checker would flag the repeated "Mug", the subjective opener and the missing color and material. Rewritten along Handbook lines, it might become one of these:
- Handmade Ceramic Mug, Sage Green Speckled Stoneware, 12 oz Coffee Cup (69 chars)
- Stoneware Coffee Mug in Sage Green, Wheel Thrown, 12 oz (55 chars)
- Speckled Ceramic Tea Mug, Sage Green Handmade Pottery Cup (57 chars)
Next, fill all 13 tag slots with multi-word phrases. Let each one describe the mug from a different angle: material, color, use, recipient, style and size.
Sage green stoneware mug
- handmade ceramic mug
- speckled coffee mug
- stoneware mug
- pottery mug gift
- large tea mug
- sage green mug
- wheel thrown mug
- rustic kitchen decor
- gift for coffee fan
- housewarming gift
- minimalist mug
- 12 oz mug
- potter made cup
13 tags · each 20 characters or fewer
Re-run the check after each round of edits. A higher score means the text now follows the rules, but it says nothing yet about buyers. Change a handful of listings, give them time, and validate against your own research and Etsy Stats before rolling the same pattern across the shop. If you are editing dozens of listings, AetherTags can apply bulk changes safely. Its Bestseller Shield protects listings that already sell well, and you get before/after proof of what changed.

Never edit a listing that is already selling well just to raise its score. If it performs, test changes on similar listings first.
What the checker cannot see
The checker reads only the three fields you paste. That leaves out several things that shape how a listing is found and chosen:
- Attributes. Color, material, occasion, style and similar fields help Etsy match your listing to searches. Fill every attribute that genuinely applies in the listing editor, because the checker has no access to them.
- Photos. Thumbnails, lighting and the first image decide whether anyone clicks, and no text score can judge them.
- Etsy Stats. Views, visits and the search terms that already bring people to your shop live in your dashboard, not here. This is a text checker, not Etsy SEO analytics.
- Price, shipping, reviews and shop history, which also influence what buyers choose.
Limits of a rule-based score
Rules make the score transparent, but they also limit what it can know. The checker cannot tell whether a phrase is something real buyers type or whether competitors crowd it. It also cannot tell whether a quirky word your niche loves is actually an asset. It scores structure and completeness, and no tool can promise rankings or sales from a number.
It is also not an Etsy SEO generator. People searching for "seo generator etsy" usually want tags and titles written for them. This tool instead tells you what to fix in text you wrote, which keeps your voice and product knowledge in the listing.

FAQ
Is the Etsy SEO checker free, and does it use AI?
It is free, and it does not use AI. Every point comes from fixed rules about titles, tags and descriptions, which is why results are instant and repeatable.
What counts as a good score?
Aim to clear every flagged fix rather than chase 100. A listing can score high and still need better photos or attributes, so validate against your own research and Etsy Stats.
Can I check titles from Etsy's AI title-suggestion tool?
Yes. Paste a suggested title in to see whether it starts with the item, keeps key traits early and avoids repetition.
Should I edit all my listings at once?
No. Change a few, give them time, compare the results in Stats, then expand what worked.
Free, no sign-up. Suggestions are generated from the details you enter — validate them with your own research. Check Etsy's current rules in the Etsy Help Center.
